Sunrise in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily

Back home and to WIFI, I’m finally able to write about my Sicilian holidays!

If you are following me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen a few pics of my wanderings in this beautiful island – I took so many photographs I have quite a few posts coming up in the next few days, so stay tuned!

We travelled to my bf’s family home in Castellammare del Golfo by ship (brought our motorbikes with us – post coming soon!), went to bed early so we were ready to move just before sunrise on our first full day in town.

I really wanted to see the town at first light, away from the crowds and the heat of the day and, as you see, we weren’t at all disappointed.

We walked along the harbour as the sun came up over the mountains and watched small fishing boats set off in the golden light.

Castellammare del Golfo dates back to the 5th century B.C., port of the nearby city of Segesta. It was later occupied by the Arabs who built the castle the town takes its name from, Castellammare del Golfo meaning Sea Fortress of the Gulf.

We left the harbour and wandered the narrow and winding streets of the old town.

Dawn is the absolutely the best time to visit during the summer. A few hours later and these steps would be packed with tourists, while we had the place almost to ourselves.

Succulents and flowers were amazing this year!

Being it so early we stopped at the local market to stock up for the week. If you are in town find the market here every Saturday morning.

Back home we treated ourselves to a very special feast.

Grilled fresh fish with tomatoes and garlic, sardines, prawns, aubergines, peppers, stuffed olives, homemade tzazicki (not exactly Sicilian, but perfect with the peppers :)), olive oil and cool white wine.

And, last but not least,  brioche with ice cream. Mmm…

The perfect way to start our trip :).

More adventures in store!
